  Mount Pinos / McGill Trail, Mount Pinos,
Los Padres National Forest, Kern County / Ventura County, ~Frazier Park, CA
 
           
  The McGill Trail on Mount Pinos is one of those trails that make one wonder why ( and be thankful that ) everyone in southern California doesn't own a mountain bike.  This out-and-back trail is so... perfect ... so complete with athletic demands and scenic gifts, that I'm tempted not to say another word about it and erase all of the foregoing praise.  However, having learned through my children that "it's fun to share," I'll go on.  The only thing keeping this trail from being a serious contender for the BEST trail in southern California is the fact that it does contain some fire road / truck trail sections and intersects pavement in two places.  Otherwise, this trail delivers everything that one might request of a trail.
