Paseo Miramar / Backbone Trail, Topanga State Park, Will Rogers Park,
Santa Monica Mountains, Los Angeles County,  Pacific Palisades, CA

Paseo Miramar / Topanga Loop, which I only ride by including the spectacular Backbone Trail downhill south of "The Hub," is one of those rides in Santa Monica that one has to be familiar with if only to establish credibility as a "real" local mountain biker.  Remember, we're in the land of Hollywood here, where image is everything.  The nice thing about the burden of having to know this ride is that it is a wonderful ride.  While virtually all fire road until we reach the Backbone trail, the uphill grunt is non-trivial (i.e. relentless) and has been described by some noteworthy riders as one of the steepest grades in the Santa Monicas.  Lots of celebrities use this trail to "escape," and perhaps work out, so one should not be surprised by seeing very famous movie and TV personalities on this route. (Remember that Hollywood creatures, outside of their natural habitat, are unpredictable in their behavior and should be treated with respect and given proper distance).
